A resume is a brief document that showcases your professional profile in an easily digestible way. Its goal is to persuade recruiters you’re fit for the job and land you an interview. Whether it’s your first time crafting one or you just need to polish the one you have, these tips will help you make sure your resume is submission ready.

Structure your resume effectively

The structure of your resume will depend on your experience and the job you are applying for. There are three main structures you can follow. A chronological resume is the most common type, listing your work experience in reverse chronological order. A functional resume focuses on your talents and achievements rather than your work history. A combination resume combines elements of the chronological and functional formats.

Formatting matters

Formatting is just as important as the content. A clean design is always best. You can also tailor it to your industry. Use a simple and easy-to-read font like Arial or Times New Roman. Use bullet points to condense and highlight important information. Use white space to make your resume easy on the eyes and avoid cramming too much information into one page. Keep your information concise and relevant. Ideally, your resume should be one page long, two at the most.

Finally, make your resume stand out by customizing it to the job post and laying out the information in a way that’s easy for the reader to identify. Be sure to emphasize your achievements, awards, and recognition to help you stand out from other candidates. Remember, this is your chance to make an excellent first impression.
